Working within the aesthetic already established in the set and costume design, the feeling of an illustrated book brought to life, we began to develop the designs for the Daemon puppets. As everyone on stage would need a puppet or Daemon of some kind there was a lot of consideration about how exactly we would achieve this. There were puppets that could be puppeteered seperately, and some that would need to be puppeteered by performers on their own. We experimented with many designs and functions, trying to make them easily identifiable and easy to pick up and learn to puppeteer, as we had quite a compact rehearsal and making period that were running alongside each other. We also worked closely with the cast and director on the Puppetry directing and puppeteering for the production. Working with Supervision and advice from Olivia Raconzier and Dik Downey, we led a team of 10 makers in creating over 40 puppets for the production, we even made Daemons for the Musicians.
The inspiration behind the design came from artists Barbra Franc and Elen Jewett, with their sculptural animals. The hessian finish inspiration coming primarily from Barbara Franc and Emma Hall. These are some of the functional and design drawings for the many puppets in the production. These are my design and practical drawings from the making process.
