AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE
CONCEPTUAL COSTUME DESIGN
By Henrik Ibsen, Adapted by Rebecca Lewenkiz
Director - Simon Reade
Costume Design - Alexandra Kay
Exploring a Style inspired by Scandinavian-Noir interior and clothing design and taking partial influence from industrial buildings, old factory windows. I took a real interest in the design of Dr Theresa Stockman and her brother Mayor Matteson as contrasting figures of strength and the ways vulnerability can be expressed or obscured in costume design. This was a conceptual design project.

The inspiration came primarily Scandinavian-noir detective shows. Colours chosen to reflect the cold of the setting and attitudes towards Dr Stockman. The town characters who align primarily with the Mayor, sit in cool tones, of blues, greys and blacks, generally more formal business wear.
The Stockman's sit in warmer tones and a more casual clothing. Heavy Jumpers, thick fabrics and dressing for winter. Using layering of costumes to explore the changing power in the town, and the vulnerability faced by Stockman and her family, living in a glass house
